The Greek Orthodox community in Fort Pierce had its beginning in the 1930's. Although few in number and without a formal place of worship, the parishioners had periodic visitations from visiting priests, first from Miami and later from West Palm Beach.
In the 1960's, the early founders built a small chapel surrounded by orange groves. Finally Fort Pierce and the Treasure Coast had its own Orthodox Church for worship and sacraments. Though a small congregation, generous donations enabled them to acquire the current property where the church and Hellenic Center now stand.
The community first built the Hellenic Center and groundbreaking for the church followed in October of 1986. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church celebrated the "Opening of the Doors" on December 6, 1987.
The beautiful St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church conforms to the 11th century model of the cruciform Byzantine church capped by a golden dome with a cross, rising 55 feet to the sky.
